Propositions 78 and 79 are two similar measures that put Sacramento in charge of buying your prescription medicines. Prop 79 is supported by socialist groups that mistakenly believe you can regulate lower drug prices. Price controls cause shortages. We cannot afford shortages of life saving drugs. Prop 79 Will create a legal mess because a hidden section will enable trial lawyers to file thouands of frivolous lawsuits simply by claiming the price charged for the product is too much or that the manufacturer's profits are too high. This measure doesn't define what is a fair price or a resonable profit. Worse, trial lawyers don't need a client to bring these lawsuits and can keep 100% of the money for themselves. The Pharmaceutical companies responded with Prop 78 to remove the provisions that punish drug companies (they got their signatures in first). Are drug prices too high? Yes, but these measures are not the solution. High drug prices are caused by the huge expense and mountains of paperwork to get new medicines approved by the FDA, along with the high cost of liability insurance when drugs that help most patients have unexpected side effects for a small percentage of patients, resulting in excessive jury awards against drug manufacturers. Remember the disastrous job the state did buying electricity? Do you want the same bureaucrats negotiating contracts for your medicine? On November 8th, vote NO on 78 and 79. |
